Jan De Nul Begins $122 Million Santos Port Deepening Project After Legal Challenge

Legal Challenge Resolved
Jan De Nul do Brasil secured the $122.3 million contract in June, but work was halted when competitor DTA Engenharia challenged the award, claiming the winning bid was unrealistically low and economically unviable.
The injunction was overturned on July 15 after appeals from both Jan De Nul and the Santos Port Authority, clearing the way for project implementation.
Environmental Phase Underway
With the work order now issued, Jan De Nul has begun environmental impact studies required to obtain licensing from IBAMA, Brazil's environmental regulatory agency. This initial phase is expected to take up to 21 months.
The comprehensive project encompasses environmental licensing, engineering design development, dredging operations, and two years of maintenance dredging for the new depth clearance.
Port Expansion Goals
The deepening initiative aims to accommodate modern container vessels with larger draught requirements and increase the port complex's overall cargo handling capacity, according to port officials.
