Historic Milestone Achieved
The PosHYdon initiative has successfully begun producing green hydrogen on the Q13a-A platform, operated by Eni Energy Netherlands approximately 13 kilometers off Scheveningen's coast. This facility represents the first fully electrified production platform in Dutch North Sea waters.
The innovative system converts seawater into demineralized water before transforming it into hydrogen through electrolysis, powered entirely by offshore wind energy. This marks a world first in combining multiple energy systems on a single marine platform.
Testing Phase and Objectives
The pilot project aims to gather practical insights into integrating diverse energy systems offshore while evaluating hydrogen production efficiency in marine environments. Researchers will examine how effectively electrolyzers function when powered by variable wind energy output.
Initial testing focuses on achieving stable system operation, with later phases examining the system's responsiveness to fluctuations in wind power generation. Comprehensive analysis of findings will occur in August and September, with results published in autumn.
Industry Collaboration
The project involves a consortium of 14 organizations including DEME, EBN, Eneco, Gasunie, Nel Hydrogen, and TNO, supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Lex de Groot of Eni Energy Netherlands highlighted the significance of repurposing existing offshore platforms for sustainable applications, describing it as a meaningful step toward future North Sea energy systems.
