Recent Connecting Europe Facility calls put real weight on cross-border impact, dual-use readiness and network effects. A bridge on its own is a project. A corridor that carries power, data and freight together is a system, and systems collect the points now.
The Innovation Fund shows the same drift. Integrated proposals that tie hydrogen, industry and grid together have pushed standalone capture projects down the ranking lists.
Why a portfolio beats a monolith
A single giant application is hard to fund and easy to reject. A portfolio of smaller modules, each with its own evidence and its own funding window, fits the landscape far better.
That is why Europe’s Gate is drawn as eight companies rather than one. Infrastructure carries the corridor, while the energy, digital and mobility modules each apply through the window that fits them. When the next CEF Energy deadline lands, the right module is already shaped for it.
